Hip hinge

Learn to move from the hips with a soft knee and a long, calm spine.

Form cues

  • Soften knees and send hips back.
  • Keep chest long without overextending.
  • Press through the whole foot to stand.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the hinge into a deep squat.
  • Rounding to reach lower.
  • Leaning back at the top.

Beginner adjustment

Regression: practice with hands sliding down the thighs or a dowel along the back. Progression: hold a light dumbbell or banded good morning.
